Friends of Anthropology
This is our general fund. It provides for a wide variety of department
initiatives and needs.
Undergraduate
Patricia Essenpreis Memorial Scholarship
This endowment is named in memory of Dr.
Patricia Essenpreis, a UF faculty archaeologist.
- Eligibility: Female undergraduate with a better than average GPA can apply. Award to be used for summer archaeological field school.
- Contact: Department Chair, 1112 Turlington Hall
- Award: $500 to be awarded annually in the spring.
Brendan O'Sullivan Award for Academic Excellence
This fund was created in memory of Brendan O'Sullivan, who died soon after being named a UF valedictorian in 1999.
- Eligibility: Highest GPA undergraduate graduating senior. Students must write a letter of application for the award.

- Award: $500 to be awarded annually in the spring.
Graduate
Custom Copies & Textbooks Graduate Student Travel Fund
Helps defray costs for graduate students to travel to professional meetings. The Anthropology Department
is very grateful to Kenny Roberts of Orange and Blue Textbooks for establishing this fund and for his
continued support as a Friend of Anthropology.
Paul and Polly Doughty Research Award
This endowment was established by Paul Doughty, Professor Emeritus, and his wife, Polly.
- Eligibility: Graduate Anthropology student support for research and/or dissemination in areas dealing with international peace, human rights, and development with preference for focus on Latin America.

- Award: Up to 4 awards annually, awarded in the spring.
Charles H. Fairbanks Award
An award to help defray research and dissemination costs for archaeology PhD students in their final year.
This endowment was named in honor of one of the department's founding archaeologists, a founder of the field of historical archaeology. The Anthropology annual Armadillo Roast is associated with awarding these scholarships.
- Eligibility: Dissertation level graduate students in archeology.

- Award: Up to six $1,000 awards annually given in the spring.
John M. Goggin Memorial Scholarship
An award to help defray research costs for PhD students in cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology.
This endowment was named in honor of Dr. John M. Goggin, an eminent archaeologist, specializing in the Spanish Colonial period. He was the first archaeology professor at UF and the first Chair of the Anthropology Department. For more information about Dr. Goggin, visit here.

William R. Maples Memorial Scholarship
To defray research costs for forensic anthropology graduate students.
This scholarship was named in honor of Distinguished Professor William Ross Maples, a pioneer in the field of forensic anthropology and former Director of the C.A. Pound Human Identification Lab. - Eligibility: Graduate student in forensic anthropology.

- Award: Up to four $500 awards annually given in the spring.
Zora Neale Hurston Fellowship
Established in honor of Zora Neale Hurston, a leading African American anthropology and literary figure of the Harlem Renaissance.

- Eligibility: Three-year award. Should be an incoming student with interests in the African Diaspora with strong GRE and GPA. Awarded every three years.

- Award: $12,000 each year for three years to same recipient, plus tuition waiver.
