Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida

Graduate Requirements

A B.A in Anthropology is not required, but you are expected to have enough background in Anthropology to understand the field and to develop your interests within it.

Our program is oriented toward the production of Ph.D.'s. However the Department does not require students to complete the M.A. before entering the Ph.D. program. This requirement could be set by a student's supervisory committee. The requirements for the M.A. currently entail 30 credits of coursework, a comprehensive exam, and a thesis. A non-thesis option is available; the student must take 32 credits, and the written product is a high quality Masters paper or research report judged as excellent by the student's committee. Our faculty strongly encourage fieldwork and/or laboratory work as the basis for the M.A. On completion of the M.A., the department will decide whether to permit the student to continue toward the Ph.D. (It is unusual for students successfully completing an M.A. not to be certified into the Ph.D. program.)
