Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida

The Anthropology Major

Students must declare a major in anthropology through the Academic Advising Center. In order to be admitted as a major, you must have a 2.0 overall G.P.A. The Undergraduate Coordinator for the department can provide you with specific departmental requirements for graduation. You should consult with a College academic advisor in the Academic Advising Center for general education requirements.

The requirements for the major consist of a minimum of 34 hours in anthropology.

The following classes are required of all majors:
ANT 2000 General Anthropology (3 hours)
ANT 2410 Cultural Anthropology (3 hours)
ANT 2140 Introduction to World Archaeology (3 hours)
ANT 3620 Language and Culture (3 hours)
ANT 3514C Biological Anthropology (4 hours)

see course descriptions

Majors are encouraged to take ANT 2000 in their first year of coursework. Of the remaining 18 hours, 15 must be 3000 level and above. The remaining required 3 hours of anthropology may be at any level (1000-6000). A grade of "C" or better must be earned in all anthropology classes. No classes for the major may be taken pass/fail.

All anthropology majors are also required to take either STA 2122 (Statistics for the Social Sciences) or STA 2023 (Introduction to Statistics). These 3 hours are in addition to the 34 hours of anthropology. A grade of "C" or better is required. Pass/Fail credit is not accepted.

Once you have completed the core requirements, you can either focus your studies on one of the four fields of anthropology or take classes in a range of theoretical and geographic topics. Depending on your interests and career goals you should select upper division electives that complement your interests in anthropology. Three areas that our students often select to minor in are African studies, Latin American studies, or Classics. A variety of options are available from which to choose classes. You should consult with a faculty member with expertise in your area of interest for suggestions on additional classes.
